Fadogia Agrestis: The West African Herb Joe Rogan Made Famous — and What the Research Actually Says

It went from obscure African botanical to the most-discussed testosterone supplement on the internet almost overnight. Here is the science behind the mechanism, why the dose matters more than almost any other compound we sell, and who it is actually for.

In 2022, Dr Andrew Huberman discussed Fadogia Agrestis on the Joe Rogan Experience. Within weeks it had sold out across every major supplement retailer in the United States. The wave hit the UK six months later. Most of the products that appeared in response to that demand were underdosed, poorly extracted, and sold at a price that made the extraction ratio economically impossible. The demand was real. Much of what met it was not.

That pattern — a legitimately interesting compound drowned in low-quality products riding a viral wave — is one of the most common failure modes in the supplement industry. Understanding what Fadogia Agrestis actually is and what it actually does is the only way to evaluate whether any given product is worth taking.

What Fadogia Agrestis Is

Fadogia Agrestis is a shrub native to Nigeria and the wider West African region. It has been used in traditional medicine across Nigeria for centuries — primarily for aphrodisiac and vitality-enhancing purposes, consistent with its modern application as a testosterone-support compound. The stem extract is the commercially used portion, and its primary active constituents are alkaloids and saponins, which are believed to drive its LH-stimulating and testicular effects.

The Mechanism: LH Stimulation

Fadogia Agrestis does not contain testosterone. It does not introduce any exogenous hormone into the body. What it appears to do — based on the research available — is stimulate the production of Luteinising Hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. LH is the signal the body uses to direct the testes to produce testosterone. More LH, more testosterone signal, more endogenous testosterone production. The mechanism is upstream rather than direct, which is both the reason it is legal and the reason it works differently from anabolic steroids.

The primary research base comes from animal studies conducted at Nigerian universities, showing significant increases in serum testosterone following Fadogia Agrestis supplementation. Human trials are limited — which is an honest limitation of the compound, and one worth stating plainly. The animal data is consistent and the mechanism is plausible, but the human evidence base is early-stage.

"It is also worth stating plainly: at high doses in rodent studies, Fadogia Agrestis has shown testicular toxicity. This is dose-dependent. It is the reason we do not recommend exceeding the 500mg daily dose, and why cycling matters."

Dosing, Cycling and Safety

Dose and cycling are not optional considerations with Fadogia Agrestis. They are the protocol. The relevant rodent studies showing testicular toxicity used doses significantly above the human equivalent of 500mg daily. The testosterone-stimulating effects were observed at lower doses. The therapeutic window is real, but it requires discipline.

Our recommended protocol is 500mg daily for eight to twelve weeks, followed by a four-week break. This cycle-and-rest approach mirrors how the compound has been discussed by the researchers and clinicians who have engaged most seriously with it. Running it continuously without cycling is not a protocol we recommend.

Who It Is For

Fadogia Agrestis is for men over 30 who are experiencing symptoms consistent with declining testosterone — reduced energy and drive, decreased muscle mass or difficulty building it, reduced libido, longer recovery from training — and who want a natural, non-pharmaceutical approach to supporting their hormonal baseline. Stack it with Cistanche 20:1 for a complete male hormonal protocol targeting the LH pathway from two different angles, and with NMN for the mitochondrial energy component that testosterone alone does not address.

Note: the primary evidence for Fadogia agrestis is preclinical (rodent). The same body of research documents dose-dependent testicular toxicity at high doses, which is why dosing and cycling matter. Robust human trials are not yet available.
